1860: Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, was elected president of the United States, defeating the Northern Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, the Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, and the Constitutional Union candidate John Bell.

1838: The Mayflower, carrying the Pilgrims to America, came in sight of Cape Cod.

1789: The first national Thanksgiving Day as proclaimed by George Washington. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt formally established the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.
